Turn off, Restart, Log off in Quick Launch
Standard variant to turn off the computer in Windows Xp is Start, then Turn Off Computer and then again you must choose Turn Off, so they are three steps to turn off you computer. There is the way to reduce this action to one step, creating a Turn Off shortcut on Desktop or in Quick Launch.
1st step – On desktop click with right button and choose New Shortcut
2nd step – In windows that will open copy in this:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00
3rd step – Click <Next> and write in your shortcut’s name. For example “Turn Off”
Shortcut is ready and it is placed on desktop. If you want to place it in quick launch just with mouse move it to quick launch.
In the same way you can create shortcuts for Restart and Log Of.
But in the second step you must copy in different text.
For restart shortcut it is: C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00
For Quick Launch shortcut it i: C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -l -t 00

Allright, but what if you click one of the icon unintentionally?
My method: click on desktop (or press windows key+d), then alt+f4 and then select option you want to use (turn-off/restart)

I’m going to try this–seems to me Kim Komando had a similar hint several years ago.
